Listener letter | So many good reasons for mandatory government service

Columnist John Ziegler argues that the Fourth of July does not bring us together as a country like it once did.
KIRO Radio’s Tom and Curley asked if we should consider making post-high school government service a requirement, in order to bring people together. It could give everyone in the United States at least one thing in common.
Eric in Bothell pitched in his two cents.
There are so many good reasons for a post high school mandatory year of government service. Everybody in the country would have at least one thing in common. No matter how many differences, we have we would all be able to relate to that same experience. Add to that the possible elimination of the basement video game child. I’ve always believed that some people just need the right little push to get started in life. Many would also learn the difference between actual labor and something just called work. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve known who have had jobs but didn’t understand the meaning of work. It’s a great idea.
