A full weekend closure of the Montlake Bridge could happen next week, or it might not, depending on the weather.

The state has picked three potential weekends for the final closure of the bridge to wrap up work from last year. It could be April 22-25. It could be May 20-23. It could be June 3-6.

The Washington State Department of Transportation’s Tony Black said it all depends on the weather.  “If the first one doesn’t work, we’ll go for the second one,” he said.  “If the May one doesn’t work, we’ll go for the June one, but we will get that work done and wrap up this project.”  We will find out early next week if it’s a go for April.

Four-month closure coming for SR 520 ramp in Redmond

The Montlake Bridge was closed for about a month last August as contractors replaced all the metal grids that make up the bridge deck. Now it’s time to finish the approaches.  “This is the last step from last year’s grid replacement work,” Black said.  “For this particular closure, we are going to be doing paving work on each end of the bridge.”

Black said this should all look very familiar to those who dealt with this last year.  “It’s going to be the same setup,” he said.  “We’re going to be using the same detours, and pedestrians and cyclists will have a shuttle that will be able to take them around the closure points.”

And for boats using the cut, it will be the same situation as well.  “We have a single leaf opening, which will be available by request,” Black said.  “If you’re out there and boating, you just have to let us know.”   If you have a larger vessel that needs both sides open, you need to provide 24-hour notice.
