An accounting professor at Everett Community College (ECC) held the equivalent of more than four, simultaneous full-time teaching contracts with a number of local technical colleges throughout the 2020-21 school year, averaging approximately 100 hours a week.

A whistleblower with ECC reported the professor to the Washington state auditor’s office. They alleged that the accounting professor held multiple, concurrent teaching contracts, working more than 100 hours a week, in such a way that negatively affected their performance at ECC.

The state auditor found that, over the 2020-21 school year, the professor taught 10 full-time courses during the fall, winter, and spring quarters; and 6 during the summer quarter. All told, the course load amounted to approximately 100 weekly hours of teaching during the winter and spring months.

The auditor notes that ECC’s campus was closed during the timeframe for COVID considerations. With the flexibility afforded by working remotely, the professor could move between teaching contracts without improper overlap.

The auditor investigated the professor’s emails, analyzed their schedule, and interviewed their colleagues. They conclude with the finding that the professor did not improperly use state resources for personal gain, and that they successfully met the obligations under their teaching contracts. No penalties or negative findings were brought against either the professor or Everett Community College.
