A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck the South San Francisco Bay area late Tuesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports.
The initial temblor struck at 11:42 a.m. with an epicenter near Seven Trees, Calif., followed by a second, 3.1 magnitude jolt at 11:46 a.m.
“One of the reasons why we felt the earthquake so strongly, even though it was a 5.1 is that it was a shallow earthquake,” Kimberly Blisniak of the San Jose State geology department told CBS News.
The quake rattled windows, and some nerves, but no initial damage was reported.
Richard Allen, Associate Director at the Berkeley Seismology Lab, told KCBS Radio before the shaking began, an early warning earthquake notification was sent to Bay Area residents. “That was great to see one of our newer technologies in terms of reducing the effect of earthquakes actually working very well,” Allen said.

The 5.1 quake is the largest in the Bay Area since a 6.0 earthquake in the Napa area in 2014.
It was also the largest quake on the Calaveras Fault since a 5.4-magnitude quake in 2007.
