Senator Patty Murray won a hard-fought Senate race after her opponent, Republican Tiffany Smiley, conceded Wednesday evening.

Murray holds an insurmountable 265,265 vote margin over Smiley after Wednesday night’s count.

“We did it!” Murray said Tuesday night. “You showed up. You showed up so generations could have a democracy.” Murray noted protecting a woman’s right to choose and social security keys to her campaign.

“I am ready to go back to Washington to fight for the people of our state. You made a difference. It takes a village,” Murray said.

Smiley did not initially concede on election night despite multiple news outlets calling Murray’s victory.

“When every legal vote is counted in Washington, we can turn the tide,” Smiley said. “We still have a long ways to go.”

Smiley thanked her workers and said the main issue in her campaign was to “improve the lives of the people in Washington.”

Patty Murray, the third-most senior member of the U.S. Senate, has won her sixth term in office. Some key issues she is running on for the 2022 election are guaranteeing access to abortion and protecting election integrity after some Republican candidates have challenged the legitimacy of Joe Biden’s presidency.

Tiffany Smiley was seeking her first term in office. The veterans’ advocate was shaped by her experience caring for her husband after he was severely wounded while serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq.
