Josh Powell captured on bank surveillance day before explosion

Feb 10, 2012, 5:19 AM | Updated: 6:33 am

Authorities have just released an image of Josh Powell making a withdrawal at a Puyallup bank the day before he killed himself and his two sons.

Powell reportedly withdrew $7,000 from the Bank of America Branch at 176th and Meridian in Puyallup.

Pierce County Detective Ed Troyer told 97.3 KIRO FM’s Ron & Don Show that investigators have determined Josh Powell’s plot to kill himself and his two young sons went back at least 24 hours.

Troyer told Ron and Don that emails and actions since uncovered show the event was premeditated.

Josh Powell’s sister, Alina Powell, called 911 when she received emails from her brother explaining what to do with his property and saying he couldn’t live without his sons. She told a dispatcher she feared her brother was going to do something because of pressure he faced after his wife’s disappearance.

“I’m terrified to drive over there,” she said, sobbing. “I’m not afraid of him. He’s never hurt me. I’m afraid of seeing something I don’t want to see.”

Josh Powell’s attorney also discovered an email left for him that read “I’m sorry, goodbye.”

“It was basically just a goodbye,” said attorney Jeffrey Bassett, who reported the email to authorities as soon as he found it in his inbox about two hours after the explosion.

“He did send out multiple emails to his pastor and relatives. It’s obvious he was getting ready to go somewhere and you take that in combination with locking the door and having gas ready to go in the house, we believe he planned this out. He planned it out for some time,” said Troyer.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
