A crash on northbound I-5 near the Mercer Street exit blocked the majority of the busy freeway Tuesday morning, jamming traffic heading into the city.

The crash blocked all but one right lane for a time, before the state began reopening lanes.

The Seattle Department of Transportation says it modified signal timing to try and mitigate impacts on traffic.

KIRO 7 reports a small car collided with a box truck. Firefighters had to cut the roof off the car to rescue the person trapped inside.

The Seattle Times reports one person was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

I-5 was completely reopened at approximately 10:10 a.m.
