Have you eaten here? More than a dozen restaurants close in Seattle-area

Although foot traffic downtown is nearing pre-pandemic levels, 15 Seattle-area restaurants have closed.

Seattle-area restaurants shutter their doors, while 46 open

Capitol Hill

Starting in Capitol Hill, Mamnoon closed after 13 years, according to The Seattle Times. The Levantine restaurant shuttered its doors, but the Mamnoon Street restaurant in Belltown remains open.

Nearby, Stateside and its sister bar, Foreign National, shut down after 11 years. Stateside, a Vietnamese-French food eatery, was owned by James Beard-nominated chef Eric Johnson.

The closure comes as a surprise to Seattle locals, according to Eater Seattle. With no warning, fans had no chance for a final visit.

Foreign National, Johnson’s neighboring bar, also closed after nearly a decade. Johnson told Eater Seattle that the closures were due to the lease expiring.

The decade-old company, Outer Planet Brewing, did not return after its lease expired in September, despite having looked for new ownership for six months.

“It’s hardly viable to run a craft brewery when the costs are what they are on the Hill,” co-owner Gabriel Villenave told Capitol Hill Seattle Blog. “Smaller breweries closing, consolidation of larger breweries taking over.”

The original Rachel’s Ginger Beer in Capitol Hill also shuttered its doors. In June, the company’s Denny Triangle location closed. However, the Pike Place Market and University Village locations are still open.

Unfortunately for those with a sweet tooth, Mighty-O-Donuts closed its Capitol Hill location, but its Green Lake, Ballard, and downtown shops remain open.

Lastly, Korean eatery Soju Anju Bar shuttered its doors.

Queen Anne

Moving to Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood, Eden Hill closed after 10 years.

Eden Hill was a James Beard semifinalist in 2016 and, according to KIRO Newsradio, reservations were so tight that even booking a week ahead meant settling for off-peak hours.

The restaurant told The Seattle Times that “rapid changing restaurant economics” made it difficult to maintain a creative menu while trying to stay afloat.

Roosevelt

Distant Worlds Coffeehouse, known as a unique spot in the neighborhood, is closing. The Seattle Times reported that the vegan hangout spot was unable to negotiate a substantial lease.

Ballard

Bickerson’s is closing its Ballard location after three years due to a co-owner’s cancer diagnosis. The business is currently looking for a new buyer.

Pioneer Square

Meanwhile, in Pioneer Square, quaint bar Bad Bishop announced its indefinite closure on Instagram.

Columbia City

Farther south, the Columbia City Ale House has closed after 25 years, but the building will soon house a second location for Rough & Tumble, a bar dedicated to women’s sports.

The Columbia City location is set to mimic its Ballard bar, featuring a green-tiled bar, large windows, a vibrant design, and, of course, plenty of screens.

“I’m excited that Rough & Tumble is opening its next location,” General Manager of the Seattle Reign FC Lesle Gallimore stated, via the bar’s website. “Rough & Tumble is about celebrating all of women’s sports and creating safe, inclusive spaces where fans can come together, connect, and be inspired. This is a powerful moment for our community.”

White Center

In White Center, Burger Planet, a food truck-turned-restaurant, has permanently closed.

“When we opened our food truck, the goal was opening a restaurant in the future, and we accomplished our dream,” the restaurant stated, according to The Seattle Times.

Locals can still grab a bite from Burger Planet’s truck.

Woodinville

Outside of Seattle, the Woodinville branch of Walla Walla Steak Co. has closed “to focus operations on the company’s core concepts,” a representative told The Seattle Times.

The Walla Walla location is still open.

Bellevue

In Bellevue, SuperKim Khao Man Gai closed after two months in the Bellevue Towers, citing “electric kitchen limitations,” according to The Puget Sound Business Journal.

The restaurant remains open at its original location in Pioneer Square.

While the closures may seem bleak, The Seattle Times noted that in the same period, 46 new restaurants have opened in Seattle.
