Boeing is reportedly working on a new plane to succeed its popular aircraft.

The aerospace giant is developing a single-aisle airplane to replace the 737 MAX, according to FOX Business.

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg spoke with officials at Rolls-Royce Holdings in the U.K. about a new engine for the aircraft, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The company is also focusing on building a flight deck for a new narrow-body aircraft, which is currently in the early stages of development, according to the media outlet.

Boeing is currently prioritizing its recovery plan, which includes delivering nearly 6,000 commercial airplanes and certifying new models, a Boeing spokesperson told FOX Business.

“At the same time, as we have done over the decades, our team evaluates the market, advances key technologies, and improves our financial performance, so that we will be ready when the time is right to move forward with a new product,” the spokesperson added.

FAA allows Boeing to determine airworthiness for some planes

Last week, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced it would once again allow Boeing to help determine whether some 737 MAX and 787 airplanes are airworthy.

The move marked a limited return to Boeing’s ability to issue airworthiness certificates—a practice the FAA halted in 2019 for the MAX following two deadly crashes, and in 2022 for the 787 due to production quality concerns.

The FAA said it’s confident the change can be made safely and will allow its inspectors to focus more closely on oversight.
