After Seattle and the surrounding Puget Sound region nearly set a record for the warmest Oct. 9 on record, according to temperature models measured at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), light rainfall will kick off the work week.

A weak front has entered the region after a relatively dry weekend, with sprinkles of rain occurring through 9 a.m. Monday. Meteorologists estimate just 0.03 inches of rain will fall before a brief dry stretch in the week.

More rain to come starting Wednesday

This Tuesday will be the last dry day for a stretch in Seattle.

Approximately 1.5 inches of rain are expected to accumulate from Wednesday through Sunday, with each day expecting to have more rain than the previous one. The heaviest rainfall, nearly 0.8 inches of the expected 1.5 inches, will occur this weekend. Higher rain totals are expected in the Cascades and Olympics.

No day this week is anticipated to have a high of 60 degrees or more.

Snow is a possibility at the Stevens and White Passes on Friday and Saturday.

King Tides return

The first set of “king tides” returned this past weekend, with tides growing to more than 12 feet.

King Tides are the highest tides that occur during each winter season when the sun, moon and Earth are all aligned. Earth rotates around the sun in an elliptical orbit and, during the winter season, the planet is closer to the sun in that orbit, producing a greater gravitational pull from the sun. When the moon is aligned with the sun, both produce a stronger gravitational pull on the oceans, resulting in king tides.

King Tides will be back Dec. 4-8.
