‘Genuinely meaningful’: Jake and Spike swap surprise Christmas gifts on air

Dec 24, 2025, 5:01 AM

Ahead of Christmas Day, “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio held a gift exchange to highlight their appreciation for each member of the team.

“We thought we could bring Christmas into your living rooms, and open gifts together,” Jake said. “I didn’t know [Spike] was getting me a gift; this is a surprise, and I didn’t think you knew I was getting you a gift. You and I collectively thought we would get Laura and Andrew a gift. There are a lot of gifts.”

“I didn’t know that you were getting me a gift at all,” Spike said.

KIRO Newsradio board op coordinator Andrew Endzell jumped the gun on the gift exchange and gave out some special homemade gifts a bit too early.

“I didn’t know we were going to do gifts today. I gave mine way too early,” Andrew said.

“He already made us gifts earlier in the week,” Jake said. “It was phenomenal, and then we said, ‘Oh geez, now we have to reciprocate.'”

“[Andrew] made homemade gifts. Nothing says I really care about you guys and appreciate working with you than a homemade gift,” Spike said.

“He’s a baker. He made the best cookies I have ever tasted in my life,” Jake said. “He made them for my family, and I ate all of them that day.”

KIRO producer Laura Scott did some extra investigative work to pick out Andrew’s gift, a personal favorite from a local Seattle brand.

“I did a little behind-the-scenes investigating, which involved asking Andrew what he would want,” KIRO producer Laura Scott said.

“It’s Rainier gin, Rainier makes gin. It’s my absolute favorite,” Andrew said.

“You should know that we made that ourselves. We grew the junipers and squeezed them ourselves,” Spike said. “But no, we appreciate what you do for us all year.”

Spike’s year-long plan comes to fruition

Laura received a great two-part gift, similar to Andrew’s alcohol theme; she got a bottle of Oyster Bay wine, paired with a special twist that can be cherished for many years to come.

“We noticed that when we start getting all spun up in Seahawks football talk, you sit there with nothing to do, so next time we start talking about Seahawks, you can pop that bottle, and you’ll have something to do,” Spike said.

Spike stated that he has picked up on some of the clues Laura has dropped over the year, and put together a unique use for gifting a stack of cash.

“You have dropped some subtle hints over the course of the year that you wished you had an executive membership at Costco,” Spike said.

“I know exactly how much money this is, yeah, this is the exact amount difference it will take me to upgrade my Costco membership,” Laura said

“I want to make you a promise that we will do this every year. We will help renew the difference for your Costco executive membership,” Spike said.

Jake and Spike ring in the new year with heartfelt gifts

Even though it wasn’t planned out, Jake and Spike both got a gift for each other.

“This feels like a trophy of some kind,” Spike said. “Oh! I’ve got the world’s biggest mug,” Spike said.

“Oh my gosh, your [gift for me] is actually cool,” Jake said.

“That is a Sonics shoot-around shirt. I’ve had that for about 25 years,” Spike said.

“Spike, this is genuinely meaningful. Mine was kind of a joke gift. I didn’t want you to have to keep getting extra coffee, so I got you that giant cup. This is ridiculous, Spike, thank you so much,” Jake said.

“No, it’s OK. This is the world’s largest change cup. If I fill this with change, I’ll be able to retire,” Spike said.
