16-year-old charged in Capitol Hill pizza parlor shooting after being escorted out with presumed fake ID

A 16-year-old boy was charged with shooting up a pizza shop after being kicked out.

The teen was charged with two counts of assault in the second degree and one count of unlawful possession in the second degree.

At approximately 1:40 a.m., officers responded to a shooting in the 1400 block of 11th Avenue, the Seattle Police Department (SPD) announced.

At the scene, officers found the pizza parlor, Pizza Mart, riddled with bullet holes. Several witnesses reported seeing the shooting.

“There were multiple bullet holes in the front of the business, including the door and the glass. They found that no one was injured, but multiple people were hit by glass fragments,” SPD Detective Eric Munoz told KIRO Newsradio.

SPD determined that a security guard at the bar had escorted the young, intoxicated suspect out of the pizza shop. The boy was drinking at the bar with his friends and was presumably using a fake ID.

He and some people he was with went into a Maserati that was parked in front of the restaurant. The teen sat in the back seat behind the passenger, and as the car pulled away from the curb, the teen allegedly fired three shots through the window of the car at the security guard who was still standing on the sidewalk.

The car then left the area.

“They walked him to a nearby car that was parked directly in front of the bar. He got into the backseat on the passenger side. Shortly after the car began driving away, the teen shot several times through that window and struck the pizza parlor,” Munoz said.

An officer was at the scene talking to the security guard when they saw the teen. Officers ordered the teen to stop, but he reportedly took off running. Police captured the teen after a brief foot chase.

Another officer spotted the Maserati that appeared to be abandoned just west of 11th Avenue on Union Street. The officer cleared the car for any additional suspects and searched for evidence. SPD impounded the vehicle as evidence. Police also found a handgun in the street and placed it in evidence.

SPD detective says ‘it’s a miracle no one was shot’

Video surveillance captured the shooting and showed five people narrowly escaping the gunfire.

“Multiple people on video surveillance were seen running and ducking for their lives. It’s a miracle that none of them was actually shot,” Munoz said.

Several gunshots struck the pizza parlor’s exterior and windows. No one has reported being shot, but several employees and customers were injured by the shattered glass, according to an SPD sergeant.

Police also initially reported that an Uber driver said the same teen had tried to steal his car at gunpoint, but the investigating detective didn’t refer it to prosecutors as a robbery, citing insufficient evidence.

Teen arrested, transported to juvenile detention

SPD arrested the teen for felony assault and robbery and transported him to juvenile detention, but he was too intoxicated to be booked and was declined at jail, pending medical evaluation.

Once he was discharged from the hospital, officers booked the suspect into juvenile detention. SPD noted an additional weapons charge may be added as detectives complete the investigation.

The teen’s arraignment is scheduled for March 4.
