At least three cougars were spotted walking through a Bellingham neighborhood Thursday morning.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) was contacted after Bellingham neighbors spotted multiple cougars. WDFW officials were sent to the scene to investigate.

“They were at the mailbox. And then the momma, she took off where you see where the fence ends here,” Lorri, a Bellingham resident, told KIRO 7 after seeing the animals in the neighborhood. “My hope is that the momma came back around and the babies made their way around through the woods here and then back together.”

A video of the cougars can be seen here.

WDFW warned residents that certain human activities can inadvertently attract predators into residential areas, including feeding wildlife such as deer. WDFW also recommended watching your outdoor pets and to consider bringing them inside while cougars are around.

WDFW will continue to monitor the Bellingham neighborhood.
