Here’s What’s Playing at This Year’s Vashon Island Film Festival

The Vashon Film Institute has announced its lineup for this year’s edition of the Vashon Island Film Festival.

Set for Aug. 13-16, the festival will screen eight feature-length films and 17 short films. VIFF will also host several local spotlight events, the local short competition shortCutz, and other special presentations like its opening-night reception, Saturday Night Soirée, and its Red Bicycle Awards.

The five narrative feature-length films in competition include:

“Adult Children,” dir. Rich Newey and Annika Marks“Crooks” dir. Mickey Keating“Hold On to Me” dir. Myrsini Aristidou“Labrador — Autopsy of Silence” dir. Rodrigue Jean“Silent Rebellion” dir. Marie-Elsa Sgualdo and Nadine LamariThe three feature-length documentaries in competition include:“Aanikoobijigan [ancestor/great-grandparent/great-grandchild]” dir. Adam and Zack Khalil“Everybody to Kenmure Street” dir. Felipe Bustos Sierra“The Life We Leave” dir. by J.J. Gerber

As part of the festival’s special event series, it will additionally screen the Anthony Bourdain biopic “Tony,” directed by Matt Johnson, on opening night to honor Vashon Island community member Stuart Gordon Tribble, who worked on the film as the head of the hair department.

Other special screenings are “Everyone is Lying to You for Money,” by Ben McKenzie, and the first episode of Chris Smith’s HBO documentary series “Bring Me the Beauties: A Model Cult.”

Other films of note include the locally made Seattle film “Radioheart: The Drive and Times of DJ Kevin Cole,” which was helmed by Andrew Franks and Peter Hilgendorf.
