The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office has shared a tragic reminder of how quickly a routine moment can turn deadly after an infant was killed in a vehicle fire Tuesday.

Just after noon, deputies and fire personnel were called to the 300 block of 93rd Ave. S.E. in Tumwater for a report of a vehicle engulfed in flames. The caller reported an infant was still strapped in a car seat inside the burning vehicle.

A father and his three children, a 12-year-old, a 2-year-old, and a 5-month-old, were preparing to leave their home. The children remained in the running vehicle while the father briefly went back inside, according to investigators.

Moments later, smoke began filling the vehicle. The 12-year-old managed to get the 2-year-old from the car and ran inside to alert their father. When they returned outside, the vehicle was already engulfed.

The father and several neighbors tried to put out the fire and rescue the infant. Several people sustained burn injuries during those efforts. The father, the injured individuals, and the children were transported for medical evaluation and treatment, but the 5‑month‑old child died in the fire.

Detectives, ATF working to determine cause of Tumwater vehicle fire

Detectives with the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office are working with local fire investigators and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to determine what caused the vehicle to catch fire.

“Our thoughts are with the family, loved ones, and all those affected by this tragic loss,” Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders said.

Investigators said the case serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of leaving young children alone in a vehicle, even for a short time, and even when a parent is nearby. Officials emphasized that unexpected emergencies, mechanical issues, or fires can escalate in seconds, leaving little time to react.

The sheriff’s office is urging parents and caregivers to take children with them every time they exit a vehicle, turn the engine off, and never assume a quick trip back into the house is risk-free.

Additional information will be released as the investigation continues.
