Both directions of SR 104 near Southpoint Road are still blocked Thursday due to a brush fire that spread to telephone wires, and the road may be closed overnight.

Washington State Patrol (WSP) Trooper Katherine Weatherwax said the fire department confirmed the road will likely be closed for the rest of the night as crews ordered more helicopters and trucks to the area.

“Please use patience as this will highly affect traffic getting across the bridge,” Weatherwax stated around 4 p.m.

The closure began at 1:07 p.m. and will remain in effect until further notice, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced.

Weatherwax confirmed that the fire started from the branches and spread upward toward the wires. At 2:15 p.m., Weatherwax said the roadway remained closed.

WSDOT advised people to plan extra time for travel on SR 104 west of the Hood Canal Bridge.

Westbound traffic is detouring at Paradise Bay Road, and eastbound traffic is detouring at SR 19.

Weatherwax advised travelers to use Center Road or Southpoint Road to avoid the closure.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
