The City of Monroe is tracking a suspected avian flu outbreak at Lake Tye Park. More than 30 dead birds have been recovered so far, and KIRO 7 got an up-close look at one of the afflicted birds.

While interviewing Monroe Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Teague, a nearby cackling goose began rolling around on its back, flapping its wings, and honking. It eventually took off, flew in a few low circles then slammed into a nearby building.

“You don’t have to be a bird expert to know that they are not well,” Teague said.

Teague told KIRO 7 his team has found 34 dead birds at the park since Saturday. Neighbors told KIRO 7 they found some nearby, as well.

“The bird dropped at the front tire of one of my vehicles,” Solomon Dewald, who lives near the park, said. “It was moving then it died all of a sudden.”

Dewald said the bird crashed and died at his house — right in front of his son.

“He was sad,” Dewald said. “Super sad. He doesn’t want to see anything die.”

The bird was injured, so Dewald assumed it had been shot.

“I thought it was a hunter,” Dewald said.

Teague said the birds were likely killed by bird flu. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is expected to test some of the carcasses Wednesday.

In the meantime, people are urged to use caution around the birds.

“If you see a sick bird, don’t touch it,” Teague said. “Similarly, if you find a body, don’t touch it.”

WDFW told KIRO 7 it is not easy for people or dogs to catch bird flu without prolonged contact. If you must handle a bird that may be infected, WDFW recommends wearing protective equipment, double bagging the carcass, and disinfecting yourself afterwards.
