...

From the room he grew up in, in South Florida, to his apartment in Savannah, where that restless tropical silent partner, humidity, continued to creep in, and now in his current home in Brooklyn – Roberto Lange of Helado Negro has never not made music.

Singing in English for the first time, as well as Spanish, Helado Negro is assisted by collaborators including Bear in Heaven’s Jon Philpot, Mouse on Mars’ Jan St. Werner, Devendra Barnhart, Matt Crum and Eduardo Alonso. Each help multiply the whispered dream of Helado Negro into a full-spectrum technicolor existence. In the way of artists like Caetano Veloso, The Sea and Cake, and even Sade, Helado Negro floats beyond his own identity into that democratic forest of shape and color. He breaks the ice on Invisible Life with ‘Ilumina Vos’ where he’s talking to you in the language he’s been teaching us the past three years through his seductive full-length albums, EP & collaboration with Julianna Barwick.

‘Relatives’ is one song from the record that I absolutely cannot get out of my head. Roberto Lange and Jon Philpot of Bear in Heaven share singing duties with Roberto taking on the verses and Philpot owning the chorus. When Philpot sings ‘Whatever you say, whatever you want me to do…I can’t help myself from following everything you do,’ I find myself thinking of my current romantic relationship and the fact that Philpot is singing my exact feelings.

Invisible Life is Helado Negro’s third full-length album.

For feminists, the deaths of Parton and Steinem days apart deliver a double dose of grief

One shaped and delivered the language of feminism. The other rejected the label but showed how feminism can be done: with a microphone dusted in rhinestones, and without apology. Gloria Steinem and Dolly Parton embodied two towering versions of the same idea: that women should know themselves well enough to make their own choices about […]
