Ask Dave and Luke: The danger of stray bullets

On Thursday, Dave Ross and guest host David Boze got a
call from a listener who also happened to be a subject in
a story they had just discussed.

According to The News Tribune, it was
gunfire, not fireworks that prompted neighbors to call
police in Tacoma. When the cops arrived, reports said that
the group was firing shots into the air.

Police arrested Delaney,
but she told the Daves she and her friends were only doing
target practice in a quarry, and no one was shooting into
the air.

David Boze: [The News Tribune article] sounded like a
felony convention, but she (Delaney) made it sound
more like a “red-neck celebration.”

Still, the conversation prompted some messages about the
danger of stray bullets.

My dad was hit by a bullet that was shot up into the
air and came down into his face while he was sleeping in a
motor home. This happened in Albuquerque in 1981.
Thankfully, he survived!

When I was a college student, I spent an evening
with a lead investigator for the local police department.
He told us a story about a man who was walking out of his
home one day and a “random” bullet hit him in the head,
ending his life. After some investigation, they were able
to determine that the bullet came from a few streets over
from a person who was trying to get rid of the last few
bullets in his pistol by shooting the gun into the air.
He was arrested for manslaughter. Yes, people firing
bullets into the air without malicious intent can kill.
