Name: Wendy
City: Seattle
Hi Guys,
I am an artist (actor) and believe that a culture is only
as great as its dreams and its dreams are dreamed by
artists. Without the arts many things we see around us in
life wouldn’t be created. Architecture: needs artist,
clothing design: needs artist, music for your wedding:
needs artist, plates you eat off of: need an artist,
movies & games you play on Xbox etc.: need an artist. So
the arts contribute to society way more than sports. Yes
sports can create relationships and temporary happiness,
it has its own contributions as Luke says, but the arts
are at the basis of our culture’s survival.
Luke: I love the arts and I support them. I’m just
trying
to say for everybody who dismisses, and I’m not saying
that listener Wendy is one of them, Dave might be one of
them, sports as a bunch of testosterone filled jocks
just running around and crashing into each other, that may
be what happens on the field, but the repercussions take
on a much more human…
Dave: You keep putting stereotypes into my mouth.
The
athletes that I’ve met are highly intelligent people. You
don’t make it in the NFL or even the baseball being an
idiot. You’ve seen the playbooks. I’m genuinely impressed
by the things these athletes accomplish. I’m
talking about the financing arrangements. You look it up;
the two top paid members on the Oklahoma City Thunder make
more than the entire budget of the Seattle opera with a
million bucks left over. So to say that this commercial
enterprise somehow needs public aid is just wrong.
Luke: I just don’t understand why you want to be on
the
wrong side of history? I mean, you’ve said you’re a little
sheepish about having opposed Safeco Field, which everyone
loves and retired all the debt.
Dave: Sheepish, no. I was right then and I’m right
now. It
got built, but it got built with the subsidy that I don’t
think they needed. There was plenty of private money there
to do it if they had wanted.
