Luke fights for freedom to blow things up

The annual warnings about the dangers of fireworks have
begun in earnest, including the demonstration of a dummy
getting various appendages blown off. But they’re not
sitting well with 97.3 KIRO fireworks aficionado Luke
Burbank from the Ross and Burbank Show.

“I have to say you guys are really killing my buzz,”
complains Luke. It’s understandable, given the huge pile
of unused fireworks still sitting in his basement after
plans to unleash the arsenal last summer were squelched
when he learned it was illegal on the national parks land
where he was camping.

While many area cities have prohibited all fireworks,
Luke argues the total bans around the Sound are
unnecessarily restrictive.

“If you were to believe the wet blankets, you would
think that 100% of the people who lit off fireworks lost
an eye. That’s the message they are sending,” Luke argues.

“They’re just asking you to be safe because kids
sometimes don’t exercise the best judgement and they might
regret later not having all their fingers,” counters co-
host Dave Ross, who advocates a safer and injury free
Fourth (which he kindly points out can be had at the Lake
Union Family Fourth, the soundtrack of which will be
conveniently broadcast on 97.3 KIRO FM.)

But Ross supports Luke’s right to safely detonate small
explosives. In fact, he’s advocating special places where
the fireworks fans can gather to blow things up.

“Just like we have dog parks, we need a free fire zone
for people like Luke. An off-leash area for Luke.”

Luke loves the idea. But instead of doggie disposal
bags, he thinks there should be a different kind of
dispenser.

“Just have a thing that dispenses band aids and gauze
and other things that you might need for your fireworks
related injuries,” Luke laughs.
