Is Russell Wilson galvanizing Seahawks fans, losing support?

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson speaks his mind, even if what is on his mind may be odd or down right ridiculous to some fans.

Wilson, who was recently featured in a Rolling Stonearticle that focused on the QB’s personality more than his skills on the field, has no problem showing support for a product he’s invested in. And he has no qualms with professing his faith and telling people that Jesus told him to practice celibacy with his girlfriend, Ciara.

His personality off the field is a stark contrast to the almost robotic man who has led the Seahawks to two Super Bowl appearances in his three years. It might make fans wonder: who is Russell Wilson?

“He’s not what we thought,” 710 ESPN Seattle’s Dave Wyman told KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson. Wilson goes from a quiet personality on the field, to the boyfriend of a pop singer who makes special appearances during Taylor Swift concerts, all while promoting bread and water. “Comes off as a little naive.”

But should fans be bothered by Wilson’s latest endeavors?

There might be &#8212 if not now, eventually &#8212 a little irrational hatred going on for Wilson, especially in a very non-religious city like Seattle, Dori said.

“I get the feeling that the more Russell talks about the celibacy, there’s going to be this galvanization for professing faith,” he added.

It is odd how close he seems to be with his agent, Wyman added. Player-agent relationships aren’t typically as hunky-dory.

But does he deserve disrespect because of some things people might find quirky? Dori said he still finds Wilson to be a great role model and “fantastic winner.” A lot of what is written about him in the Rolling Stone article are “cheap shots.”

“We have to accept him for who he is,” Wyman added. “You have to be tolerant for who he is off the field.”
