Edmonds School District takes fun out of birthdays by banning sugary treats

I loved birthdays in school because whenever a classmate had a birthday, if their parents were any darn good, they’d bring in treats for the whole class, enough for everybody. But this tradition will be no more in the Edmonds School District.

The Edmonds School District has now ruled that, thanks to the “Wellness Committee,” they will ban edible treats to promote healthful eating in the schools. So food items are now prohibited for classroom birthday parties.

This is so ridiculous. Why can’t we have fun anymore?

The school principal at Maplewood Elementary, Michelle Mathis, she said, they want to celebrate the child and not the sweets.

But here is the thing. There are a lot of kids who the other kids don’t like. How are these kids going to make friends if they’re not handing out treats? You can buy friendship with a cupcake.

Of course they can’t ban birthdays, so how will they celebrate? Thank goodness the Wellness Committee has actually made a suggestion to all the parents in the Edmonds School District of what they can bring to pass out.

They are suggesting gift pencils, origami frogs, and extra recess time. I might even prefer extra recess time to a cupcake. But it seems kind of dumb considering the fact that we’re having trouble enough educating our kids, to take away classroom time and give them extra recess time just to spare them the horror of eating a cookie.
