A man is dead and three police officers are on paid administrative leave after an officer-involved shooting in Tacoma on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Tacoma News Tribune, officers arrived to the 5600 block of South Lawrence Street around 3:20 p.m. to find a man screaming, acting erratically, and holding a handgun.

Police spokesperson Loretta Cool said, “There was an exchange of words, commands, ‘Drop the weapon, drop the weapon,’ and then there was an exchange of gunfire.”

Officers fired at the man — in his mid 40s — and he died at the scene.

All three officers were unhurt, according to the Tribune. The officers are a 35-year-old man, a 38-year-old man, and a 47-year-old man.

Cool told the Tribune two homes in the area were struck by bullets. The neighbors didn’t know the man who was shot.
