Though the snowfall across Western Washington on Friday morning is early, it’s not the earliest we’ve seen.

The earliest date of measurable snowfall for the Seattle area occurred on Oct. 27, 1971, according to the National Weather Service. A total of 0.4 inches fell that day. It snowed two inches in Bellingham on Oct. 28, 1991.

Thousands without power as snow continues to fall

“We typically start to see it somewhere around the middle of the month,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Ted Buehner said.

According to the NWS, early snow doesn’t always mean a snowy winter.

1971-72, 29.2 inches
1973-74, 4.2 inches
1975-76, 4.9 inches
1911-12, 10.2 inches
1938-39, 1.6 inches

On this day last year, Seattle was dry with a high of 65 degrees.

It may continue to snow in the lowlands through the weekend. We could see snow in the South Sound late Saturday or early Sunday before it warms back up next week.
