Hope Solo has wrapped herself in a protective blanket of soccer fame.

New information has surfaced about Solo’s domestic violence charges, including having to be wrestled to the ground by police after she allegedly assaulted her half-sister and nephew, ESPN reported. Despite the information, the 33-year-old goalie prepared for the opening-round match of the World Cup on Monday.

“She appears to be a problem drinker,” KIRO Radio’s Ron Upshaw said. “This is unacceptable for U.S. Soccer.”

Solo was arrested after police were called to the Kirkland home. Solo’s teenage nephew told police she was drinking and abusive at the family gathering. She was later suspended from the U.S. Women’s National Team for 30 days, after the DUI arrest of her husband.

Solo should no longer be on the team, Ron said. Or, at the very least, benched while the case is under review. There are millions of boys and girls who look up to soccer stars like her, he added.

The team clearly doesn’t care about the well-being of the soccer star, Don O’Neill pitched in. They allow her to be surrounded by enablers. For instance, her husband, former Husky and Seahawk Jerramy Stevens, was formally charged with DUI in March; He was also convicted of DUI in 2007.

“It’s just like Michael Jackson,” Don said. “Surround yourself with a bunch of people that are willing to do what you want to do and just enable you, then you end up dying at a young age; When you shouldn’t have died when you still have so much of your gift to give to the world.”

And what happens when Solo’s soccer career comes to an end?

“A few years from now, the soccer career goes away,” Don said. “And then she has to look into the mirror…”
