New Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan was asked about something she’s been saying — that’s often met with laughter — in her speeches: If the solutions to Seattle’s problems were easy, “the city wouldn’t have elected a woman mayor.”

Durkan repeated it again during her inauguration speech on Tuesday.

“There are no easy solutions to any of these problems,” she said. “Many of them were years in the making. If there were easy solutions, Seattle probably would not have elected a woman mayor again.”

Durkan told KIRO 7’s Essex Porter:

“I think that when you add diversity in the workforce, one of the things you are doing is bringing different points of view and so if you bring a woman into a position where usually men have done it you’re going to get different points of view, I think we’ve got to build a very vibrant quilt here — my mayor’s office is going to reflect all the people of Seattle.”

Durkan is the first woman mayor of Seattle since Bertha Knight Landes, elected in 1926 with a promise to clean up city government.
