Sound Transit is encouraging Seattle residents to speak up about the proposed light rail extension to the Ballard neighborhood. Community leaders and Sound Transit CEO Dow Constantine will gather at the National Nordic Museum at 6 p.m. on Monday.
The extension is delayed until 2042, but hopes to connect Seattle’s Westlake station to new stops at Denny, South Lake Union, Smith Cove, Interbay, and Ballard. The agency admitted on its website that the project is in danger, as it navigates a $34.5 billion funding shortfall.
“Construction from Seattle Center to Ballard is not currently funded in Sound Transit’s Long Range Financial Plan. Work is ongoing to identify additional funding and cost savings to advance construction,” Sound Transit stated.
Monday’s community forum at the National Nordic Museum will explore how Sound Transit is approaching cost reductions to deliver the project, and what to expect next. Attendees also have an opportunity to ask questions. Joining the Sound Transit CEO are King County Executive Girmay Zahilay and Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson.
