Seattle chosen No. 2 in top cities for young people

Kiplinger has chosen Seattle as No. 2 in its Top 10 Cities for Young People, citing the city’s starting salary of $46,700 as one of the main reasons.

Kiplinger researchers screened for cities with high starting salaries for college grads, using data from Payscale.com. The magazine also looked for a cost-of-living score near or below 100 as well as affordable monthly rents. (The median U.S. rent, including utilities, is $817.) It also sought cities where the percentage of residents ages 20 to 29 is near or greater than the average of 13.8 percent.

Seattle checked in with 14.5 percent of its residents in the 20-29 age cohort. The average monthly rent was found to be $942.

Cincinnati topped the list ($41,800 average annual salary, $675 monthly rent) and Washington, D.C., ($49,000 and $1,226) finished at No. 5.
