The call came in at about 1 a.m. Friday morning. Auburn police raced to investigate a suspicious package left on the side of the road.

The box had nothing to identify it. It was sealed with tape. What was inside was quite a relief — kittens.

“Imagine our surprise when the box was opened and these lovable fellows were found inside!” the Auburn Police Department wrote on its Facebook page.

The small kittens were taken to a vet to be checked out. They are now headed to the Auburn Valley Humane Society to go up for adoption.

Auburn police have a message for whoever left the kittens sealed up in the suspicious package: “To those that left them there, shame on you!”

The Auburn Police Department says that unwanted animals can be handled through Animal Control by calling 253-931-3062 or by calling the non-emergency police number at 253-288-2121.

Police are asking for any information about who may have left the kittens on the roadside. Tips can be called in to 253-288-7403, referencing case number 18-05619.
