The King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) will host a gun buyback in Burien Saturday, Oct. 17, from 8 a.m. to noon, offering gift cards to people who turn in unwanted operational firearms.

KCSO Major Koby Hamill said the event is intended to remove firearms people no longer want from circulation amid concerns about gun violence in King County and communities across the country.

“Our goal is to get unwanted firearms out of circulation if somebody doesn’t want them anymore,” Hamill said.

He emphasized that the program is voluntary.

“This is not about making people surrender firearms,” Hamill said.

The event will accept handguns, shotguns, rifles, and other firearms.

Gift cards will range from $50 to $300, depending on the type of operational firearm turned in. Ammunition may also be surrendered, but it is not eligible for a gift card.

The buyback will take place at the King County Sheriff’s Office precinct in Burien, at 14905 6th Ave. SW. The office plans to accept firearms until noon, while gift card supplies last.
