Man tries to sell home he didn’t own

Police continue to search for a 36-year-old man in Campton Hills, Ill., who they say tried to sell a home that wasn’t his.

Police say that Daniel Kellogg began to sublet a home he was renting to other renters, pocketing their rental money. Police also allege that Kellogg changed the title of the house to his name and listed the home with a real estate professional to then try to sell it.

Law enforcement officials have increasingly been warning home owners and real estate professionals of scams involving homes and rentals.

For example, in another scam recently reported, scammers were using actual for-sale listings and then promoting them as rentals – without the home owners’ consent.

Scammers reportedly have been taking listing information of homes for-sale – including photos – and then reposting that information on rental sites and tweaking it to pass the home off as a rental. The scammers then use a fake lease agreement and would collect rent from unsuspecting consumers.
