The timing is uncanny, but the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has had this overnight closure on the books for weeks.
This, coincidentally, follows the apparent spontaneous “sick-out” that Washington State Ferries’ (WSF) engineers executed Monday morning. This brought the ferry system to a halt, with most routes shut down and only a few routes running on very limited service throughout the day.
The Edmonds/Kingston ferry route will be suspended for railroad work that BNSF said is critical and needs to take place at this time. WSF said they “explored ways to keep service,” but the railroad work needs the crossing arms to be down, and there is no way around this.
Edmonds/Kingston closure details
From 7 p.m. Tuesday until approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday, the closure will block access to the Edmonds ferry terminal.
The last sailings Tuesday will be 6:10 p.m. from Kingston and 7 p.m. from Edmonds. Service is scheduled to resume Wednesday at 9:35 a.m. from Kingston and 10:20 a.m. from Edmonds, provided the crossing reopens as planned.
Walk-on passengers traveling between Kingston and the Seattle area can consider Kitsap Transit’s Kingston Fast Ferry to downtown Seattle.
Other customers should plan to use another route or make other travel arrangements during the suspension.
