A person was killed due to a “mechanical mishap” on northbound I-5 at the Nisqually River Bridge, and a car subsequently caught fire.
The incident happened around 5 p.m. Thursday.
“Just received clarification that this was not the result of an explosion, but a mechanical mishap,” Washington State Patrol Trooper Kameron Watts stated on X. “There’s two vehicles involved, and one of them did indeed catch fire.”
Northbound I-5 is fully blocked. Traffic is being diverted at milepost 110. There is no ETA on when the road will reopen.
This is a developing story, check back for updates.
