Southbound I-5 in Seattle has reopened after a lane was closed due to a loose truck tire that flew off the highway and down into the Eastlake neighborhood, causing minor property damage but no reported injuries.

The collision occurred at 10:26 a.m. and was partially blocking the southbound I-5 on-ramp to Boylston Avenue at milepost 168, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced.

Eastlake residents walking their dogs report loud crash before debris rained down

Residents nearby were walking their dogs next to an apartment complex when they reported hearing a loud crash from above on I-5, followed by debris falling from overhead, according to FOX 13.

Shortly after, a rogue tire fell roughly 20 feet away from the residents and bounced about 50 feet into the air. The tire then struck and cracked a resident’s window before hitting the side mirror of a parked car.

WSDOT noted there was a roughly three-mile backup into Greenwood as a result of the collision. Incident Response, Washington State Patrol, and tow crews all responded to the scene.

Delays throughout the area are anticipated.
