A fatal head-on crash caused US 101 to be shut down for hours in Clallam County on Sunday evening, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) confirmed.

According to WSP Trooper Katherine Weatherwax, one person was killed and two others were seriously injured.

The crash occurred at 7:30 p.m. near Palo Alto Road. A 39-year-old Colorado resident was driving west on US 101 in a Chevy Silverado when he crossed the center line and hit another car head-on.

The car that was struck had two people inside it. A 39-year-old man was confirmed dead at the scene, while the second passenger, a 34-year-old woman, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The two victims shared the same last name, according to WSP.

The driver who caused the crash was also airlifted to Harborview Medical Center, but his injuries have yet to be reported. He is being investigated for vehicular homicide and vehicular assault, and a toxicology test is being run on him.

US 101 reopened just before 3 a.m., seven hours after the crash occurred.
