The mysterious death of a 4-year-old boy in Aberdeen remains under investigation after the child was found buried on a relative’s property in early May.

The Aberdeen Police Department is investigating the death of Aiden Bevins, but has not yet released details on his cause of death or if anyone could face charges, according to KING 5.

Relatives of the family explained that they called the police for a welfare check after Bevins wasn’t seen for some time. Investigators later located the child’s body on the property, according to KING 5.

“Authorities found the little boy buried in a shallow grave in the backyard of a house,” Washington State Republican Party Chair Jim Walsh said, according to The Daily World. “The Aberdeen Police Department is still an active investigation and it’s easy to presume this or that, but we should try not to do that.”

A neighbor, Zoey Richards, said she knew there was something wrong when several police cars responded to her neighborhood.

“The entire alleyway down there, it’s kind of a street in between two blocks, was pretty much row to row police cars, and they had a full-on investigation division or something out there,” Richards told KING 5. “That’s absolutely awful, honestly. I couldn’t imagine it down here.”

On Sunday, members throughout the Aberdeen community came together to remember Bevins and described him as a young boy with an infectious smile.

Many neighbors spoke out about the incident, stating the death was “beyond sick” or simply “devastating news.”

Former foster parents share heartbreak after Aberdeen boy’s death

Gary and Magali Lopez, Bevin’s former foster parents who cared for him from ages one to three, spoke publicly and described the tragic loss, noting their fears of returning him to his biological family.

“Something that we had been dreading, something that we, a fear of ours ever since he left,” Gary told KING 5.

Magali shared that the news was heartbreaking and turned their whole world upside down.

“To see his face in the news, just shattered our world,” Magali said. “It’s unbelievable.”

Walsh stated that the Lopez’ fears were realized even after contacting Child Protective Services and the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) with their concerns over Bevins welfare.

“They voiced their concerns to Child Protective Services and the DCYF, and the foster parents said, ‘We think this child is in trouble. Please look into it.’ But the foster parents weren’t listened to,” Walsh said. “Their fears were realized.”

After investigators located Bevin’s body, they were seen speaking with a man at the home.

The Gray’s Harbor County Coroner’s Office noted that autopsy results are still pending, which investigators believe could help determine the cause and time Bevins died, according to KING 5.
