Two people were found dead inside a home in Federal Way after authorities conducted a welfare check, the Federal Way Police Department reported.

The welfare check was conducted just after 12 p.m. Jan. 22 near 27th Place S.W. and S.W. 337th Street in Federal Way, with officers discovering a male and female in their mid-60’s deceased inside the residence.

The Federal Way Police Department called the victims’ son, Mick Carmichael, 35, a person of interest in the death of his parents. After actively searching for him, Carmichael was spotted by a patrol officer. He was placed into custody just after 5 p.m.

Background from court records

Court records obtained by KIRO 7 revealed Carmichael has a lengthy criminal history involving violence, including multiple cases related to assaults against his parents and other individuals.

In May 2021, Carmichael pleaded guilty in King County Superior Court to two counts of fourth-degree assault involving domestic violence. Prosecutors listed Carmichael’s parents as the victims in that case.

Court documents stated that Carmichael struck his father repeatedly over the course of several hours, causing significant facial injuries. He also assaulted his mother once she arrived home, striking her in the face and slamming her head into a staircase.

The home listed in those documents is the same address where Carmichael’s parents were found dead on Thursday. It’s not the only violent confrontation Carmichael had with his parents. In September 2015, Carmichael pleaded guilty in King County Superior Court to fourth-degree assault involving domestic violence after prosecutors said he assaulted his father during another incident at the same Federal Way home.
