A man on the roof of an Everett home was arrested for trespassing Monday after he allegedly refused to come down and climbed into the chimney.

At approximately 8:40 a.m., the Everett Police Department (EPD) was dispatched to the 1300 block of Broadway Avenue for a trespassing complaint.

Neighbors called 911 and said there was smoke coming from a boarded-up home that had no trespassing signs posted outside.

Officers arrived at the scene and said they could hear a person inside the residence, and confirmed there was smoke coming from the chimney.

The suspect refused to exit the building, and officers attempted to enter through the front door.

While officers entered the home, the suspect climbed out of a second-story window and onto the roof.

Officers outside told the suspect to surrender and come down from the roof, although he disobeyed commands and climbed into the chimney as it was still smoking. The suspect became stuck in the chimney shortly after.

The Everett Fire Department (EFD) was called in to rescue the trespasser from the chimney. EFD attempted to rescue the suspect from the top of the chimney, but he refused assistance and continued moving further down the chimney.

EPD noted there was smoldering debris in the fireplace that was promptly removed, as well as the fireplace’s mantel, which opened the wall to extricate the suspect.

After the man was safely removed from the chimney, he was arrested and transported to Providence Hospital for a medical evaluation.
