Authorities seized 57 animals from a Poulsbo home on Tuesday after receiving a tip about their disastrous living conditions.

The animals included dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, and one domestic pig. Many were found underweight and covered in unknown substances, according to the Kitsap Humane Society.

Staff worked to stabilize and clean the animals in immediate need. The sudden spike in capacity has significantly increased demands on the shelter’s resources and facilities.

57 pets seized in Poulsbo; shelter seeks help

“We are in the process of bathing every single animal to get them cleaned and comfortable,” Jamie Nocula, the executive director of operations at Kitsap Humane Society, told KIRO 7.

The shelter is asking the community for support through donations, volunteers, and foster care to help with the ongoing effort. The organization specifically noted an urgent need for puppy food to help feed the many young dogs seized during the operation.

“Many hands make light work. We need help right now,” Nocula told KIRO 7, while expressing appreciation for the support received since the seizure began, stating the organization is also “remarkably grateful and indebted to everybody who has stepped in.”

Investigators have not yet released details about any possible criminal charges or the conditions that led to the animal seizure. The investigation remains ongoing.
