Early on July 18, Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers were on a traffic stop on southbound I-5 North of S. 272nd Street when they heard sounds they recognized as gunfire, according to a press release.

The troopers saw two vehicles driving fast approaching their location and witnessed the occupants firing weapons at each other. The troopers attempted to overtake the vehicles, but were unable to. The troopers lost sight of the vehicles, but believed they exited to S. 272nd Street, the press release states.

No injuries were reported in the shooting.

WSP Public Information Officer Trooper Rick Johnson posted dashcam video online Tuesday and wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that, “It is believed that the two vehicles were sedans, one red and one white.”

WSP detectives still are seeking witnesses or any information that may help solve the case.

This is the second homicide within the same three blocks in SODO in just 12 hours, and Seattle police say it’s the city’s 44th homicide of the year.

Just after 3 p.m. Monday, there were multiple reports of a shooting near the intersection of 1st Avenue South and South Massachusetts Street. Officers arrived and located a 48-year-old man and a 29-year-old man both with gunshot wounds.

Investigators determined that the 48-year-old man was on his motorcycle when two other men, also on motorcycles, attempted to rob him.

During the robbery, the victim drew his firearm. The 29-year-old suspect also produced a firearm. Both the victim and the suspect fired their weapons.
