An officer-involved shooting broke out late Monday afternoon in Pierce County after deputies pursued a suspect allegedly attempting to set a gas station on fire.

The suspect, tied to a string of previous robberies, died at the intersection of 112th Street S. and C Street S., where the police pursuit ended.

Deputies were initially called to the PetroCard Pacific Pride fuel station at 11002 Pacific Avenue S. after receiving reports of a man attempting to use a torch to set the building on fire. He was breaking items and throwing them around, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

When deputies arrived, he fled the scene, taking off in a southward direction.

After a brief police pursuit, shots were fired near the 112th Street S. and C Street S. intersection. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the suspect died at the scene.

Who fired the shots, or how many rounds were discharged, has yet to be revealed, as of this reporting. A responding deputy may have been injured during the incident, according to KIRO 7. Tacoma Fire Department crews were called to the scene to assist.

An investigation is underway.
