A “significant breakthrough” was made in the investigation of the Parkland homicide case, where the suspect, Brandon Torres-Mesa, has been taken into custody in Mexico.

Torres-Mesa was accused of killing 17-year-old Braylon Diaz on May 24, 2026, in the 10200 block of Sheridan Avenue South in Parkland, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO).

Following a joint law enforcement effort, Torres-Mesa was successfully located in Mexico, apprehended, and returned to the United States. Torres-Mesa is currently in custody and will soon be extradited to Washington, where he will face trial.

“This arrest represents the culmination of years of partnership with our international law enforcement agencies,” PCSO stated. “Detectives remained committed to pursuing every available lead and ensuring that the suspect would ultimately be held accountable.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the FBI South Sound Task Force, PCSO and law enforcement authorities in Mexico teamed up to take Torres-Mesa into custody.

“While no arrest can erase the pain experienced by the victim’s loved ones, today’s announcement marks an important step toward justice,” PCSO stated. “It is our hope that this development brings a measure of peace and closure to the victim’s family, knowing that the individual accused in this case is now in custody and is no longer in a position to harm anyone else.”

On May 24, deputies responded to reports of a teenage boy lying in the roadway. They began life-saving efforts when they arrived, but Diaz died at the scene.

Investigators said Diaz was walking with his girlfriend when a vehicle approached, and someone inside called him over. Pierce County Sheriff’s Office investigators said the fatal attack was believed to have been random.

“Preliminary information indicates the victim was walking with his girlfriend when a vehicle approached and called him over,” PCSO stated. “Suspects in the vehicle robbed the victim of some jewelry, shot him, then fled the scene.”

In late May, A 26-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man were arrested separately in Snohomish County.

Detectives said they believe the pair was in the car when it pulled up, robbed Diaz of his jewelry, then shot him before driving away.

“She was arrested at the Walmart in Tulalip. A male had been taken into custody earlier in the day during a traffic stop,” Pierce County Deputy Carly Cappetto said.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Diaz’s family with funeral costs and additional expenses.
