A 20-year-old man believed to be having a mental breakdown was arrested in Parkland after firing multiple gunshots inside a home, prompting a stand-off with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO).

Police responded to a call at approximately 12 p.m. Sunday after reports of at least a dozen gunshots in a home on the 500 block of 127th Street S., according to KIRO 7.

SWAT team called in Pierce County

Family members of the 20-year-old man mentioned they were worried for his mental health, noting he had not slept for 24 to 48 hours, and believed he could be going through a mental breakdown.

Family members inside the home reported no injuries as a result of the gunshots, and after PCSO arrived on the scene, the family exited the home safely.

PCSO deputies noted that at least a dozen gunshots could be heard from inside the house, and evacuated residents in surrounding buildings in response. The SWAT team was called to the scene due to the uncertainty and possible danger of the situation.

The man peacefully surrendered after law enforcement gained communication with the shooter, and he was arrested and booked into jail under a reckless endangerment charge.

The PCSO is still investigating the incident.
