The Seattle Police Department (SPD) is investigating the death of a one-year-old boy after officers were called to an apartment in the 2200 block of Grand Street on Sunday afternoon in the Atlantic neighborhood.

SPD Detective Brian Pritchard said dispatchers received 911 calls about an unresponsive child at approximately 12:24 p.m.

“Officers arrived and found an unresponsive male child. Despite lifesaving efforts, the Seattle Fire Department medics were unable to save the child’s life, and the child was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Pritchard said.

The incident occurred inside an apartment, where first responders worked on the child in the hallway after removing him from the unit.

“They were in an apartment; the child was actually,” Pritchard said. “The fire department brought the child out into the hallway and worked on the child, but was unfortunately unable to save the child’s life.”

Investigators believe narcotics may have played a role in the child’s death

According to investigators, the child’s mother was arrested at the scene and is under investigation for domestic violence manslaughter.

Pritchard said narcotics may have been a contributing factor in the child’s death, based on what officers observed inside the apartment.

“The officers were out there, and something made it appear to them, maybe drugs in the house or something like that, that made them think that the child’s death may have been caused by narcotics or something of that nature,” Pritchard said.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death. Detectives continue to investigate, and police said no additional information is available at this time.

The child has been identified only as a one-year-old male. Further details, including his name, are being withheld pending family notifications and the outcome of the medical examiner’s report.
