Two teen boys were arrested after a shooting broke out near two schools in South Seattle Wednesday afternoon.

The boys, 16 and 17 years old, were armed with a modified handgun following the shooting in the Mount Baker neighborhood, according to a post by the Seattle Police Department (SPD).

Seattle police are currently investigating the shooting that occurred near the 3300 block of Wetmore Avenue South.

Patrol officers were sent to the area after reports of gunfire. Once they arrived, officers recovered multiple shell cases, and witnesses reported two suspects running from the scene.

Police caught the two suspects and detained them. They also seized a handgun with an extended magazine and an auto sear or “switch” that converts the weapon into automatic fire.

During the investigation, police determined the boys were involved in the shooting with at least two other people, SPD stated.

Teens arrested, booked into detention center

Police arrested the teens for unlawful possession of a firearm. SPD noted both boys are convicted felons and are prohibited from having guns. They were booked into the Patricia H. Clark Children and Family Justice Center.

Authorities looked for the remaining suspects, but didn’t find them.

Nearby schools sheltered in place

Franklin High School was placed on lockdown, and John Muir Elementary School issued a shelter-in-place order during the investigation, according to KIRO 7. No students were injured, SPD confirmed.

Police are working to figure out what led up to the shooting. Anyone with information is urged to call SPD’s Violent Crimes Tip Line at 206-233-5000. Anonymous tips are accepted.
