The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office have confirmed on social media that a 22-year-old Lake Stevens man was taken into custody Friday afternoon for second-degree murder in connection with Thursday night’s drive-by shooting on S. Machias Road in Snohomish.

When deputies arrived on the scene at around 7:45 p.m. Thursday evening, they found a man in his 30s deceased in the road.

A spokesperson for the Washington Department of Corrections (DOC) said the deceased worked at the Monroe Correctional Complex but declined to provide his name until it is released by local authorities, according to The Everett Herald.

The DOC told FOX 13 that the victim was a correctional officer at Monroe Correctional Complex.

Detectives have continued looking for witnesses, including the following:

  • Potential witnesses inside a “dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee with three dark rims and one silver rim” on the driver’s side. The sheriff’s office confirmed on X, formerly known as Twitter, Saturday they spoke with the witness in the Jeep. “He is a cooperative and not believed to be involved,” the post reads.
  • People who witnessed the victim and a woman trying to slow traffic on South Machias Road for deer crossing around 7:40 p.m. Thursday
  • Those who witnessed the suspect’s vehicle, a silver 2001 Lexus GS300, before or after the shooting. Detectives impounded the vehicle Friday as evidence.

Investigators do not believe there is any danger to the community, according to the Herald.
