The Seattle Police Department (SPD) arrested a young man during the New Year’s Eve celebration under the Space Needle after it was reported that he was carrying a partially-concealed shotgun, a pistol, and several rounds of ammunition.

On Dec. 31 at approximately 7:20 p.m., SPD patrol officers were called to respond to reports of a man sitting on a bench near the Pacific Science Center holding a partially concealed shotgun.

“Witnesses saw him holding the gun by the grip, causing alarm, while facing the area where spectators were gathering for the fireworks display,” SPD wrote in its crime blotter.

The suspect was in all black clothing and wearing a red hat with “WAR” written across it when he was arrested. He reportedly cooperated with police during his arrest, and had a valid concealed carry permit.

Additionally, SPD’s Arson Bomb Squad (ABS) swept his car for potential weapons or explosives, finding none.

“ABS determined the suspect’s vehicle did not pose a threat,” SPD wrote.

The suspect was arrested and booked into the King County Jail for unlawful use of weapons. The Emergency Services Unit, which provides campus security for the Seattle Center, issued the suspect a one-year trespass warning.

The incident is currently under investigation.
