The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office has announced that one sheriff’s deputy has succumbed to his injuries in the hospital after a shooting that happened in Spangle, just south of Spokane, on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
“It is with extreme sadness we inform the citizens of Spokane County that one of the Deputies who was critically injured has lost his valiant fight and succumbed to his injuries last night. He is survived by his wife and two children,” the sheriff’s office stated.
A second sheriff’s deputy remains on life support in critical condition but is not expected to survive. Organ donor arrangements are being considered.
This announcement follows one day after both deputies were in critical condition after responding to a domestic violence shooting, KREM reported.
The deputies’ identities are not being shared at this time.
“Although we know our Deputies knew the risks, they bravely moved toward danger to protect others they did not know. They did this with honor and with an unwavering sense of duty to their oath to serve and protect the citizens of Spokane County; they heroically placed themselves in mortal danger,” the release stated. “They are true examples of selfless service and dedication. They are the epitome of what the men and women in law enforcement are; they are the best of all of us. We cherish having served with them as we begin to process the devastating and unthinkable loss.”
The incident originally killed three people, including the suspect, according to KREM. One victim was found dead outside the home, while two others were found deceased inside.
Upon arriving on scene, deputies learned the male suspect had an active felony warrant for his arrest and may have access to additional weapons.
Washington State Patrol told KIRO Newsradio the agency is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
The previous details
A domestic violence shooting killed three people and critically injured two Spokane County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deputies Tuesday afternoon, KHQ reported.
At approximately 2:25 p.m., SCSO deputies responded to reports of the shooting at a residence in the 18700 block of S. Smythe Road in South Spokane County, SCSO announced.
Initially, one adult female victim said she was shot and required medical attention. She was transported to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect reportedly was the brother of the woman, according to The Spokesman Review.
As deputies arrived on scene, they learned that the adult male suspect had an active felony warrant for his arrest, could have access to other weapons, and there may be additional victims.
After the Spokane County SWAT Team responded to assist, both deputies and SWAT approached the suspect’s residence and made entry as officials feared for the victim’s safety.
Gunfire from inside home critically injures two deputies
As teams were approaching the residence, shots were fired from inside the home, striking two deputies and critically injuring them.
Other deputies fired back at the suspect while simultaneously working to move the wounded deputies to cover and administer medical aid.
In response to the deputies’ severe injuries, immediate life-saving medical aid was requested, such as Life Flight helicopters. Portions of I-90 and US-195 were shut down by the Washington State Patrol and other local agencies for emergency transport.
SCSO noted both deputies remain hospitalized in critical condition, as of this reporting.
Once the suspect was believed to have been barricaded inside the home, the Spokane Police Department SWAT Team and Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team were requested. SCSO deputies were relieved of their duties, and Spokane Police took over the active crime scene.
