The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) released new footage of a car crash that resulted in a suspect attacking a deputy, reaching for her gun, and ultimately being wrestled to the ground by several officers.
On Oct. 15 at approximately 4:45 p.m., the deputy responded to a collision on State Route 510, where the suspect was trying to approach the other driver, TCSO reported.
The deputy briefly spoke to the occupants of the car that was in a ditch near the roadway before turning her attention to the suspect.
“[The suspect] just charged at me, then ran back into the car. He can’t go anywhere, it’s missing a wheel,” an officer said while pointing a Taser toward the suspect.
The suspect rummaged through his vehicle as the officer repeatedly told him to sit down.
“He’s in and out of the car, looking around. Not making any aggressive movements right now, but not complying with my verbal commands,” the officer relayed to dispatch.

After a few additional requests for the suspect to sit down, he began to walk toward the officer. At this time, the deputy raised her Taser and pointed it at the suspect again.
“If you approach me, you’re going to get tased. Have a seat, you’re not going near those people either,” the officer said.
Shortly after the commands, the suspect turned and sprinted toward a guardrail on the other side of the roadway. The deputy deployed the Taser several times, though it did not work.
While being shot with the Taser, the suspect began to charge at the officer, assault her, and make multiple attempts to remove the officer’s gun from the holster.
Nisqually Tribal Police and an off-duty corrections officer arrived on the scene and assisted with apprehending the suspect.
The suspect was ultimately taken to the ground and arrested with the help of other officers.
TCSO Sheriff Sanders noted that once another deputy arrived on scene and successfully deployed a Taser, the suspect surrendered.
“The deputy in this incident was beyond professional, and tried to gain verbal compliance while utilizing time, distance, and cover tactics,” Sanders stated. “Despite those efforts, the suspect continued to attack.”
